Why Would I Do That to Myself?

Why would I do that to myself?  That is the question I have been asking myself lately.

On January 1st, Team Zoë will be represented at the First Annual Punk Rock Plunge at Marley's on the Beach in Warwick Rhode Island.

My team will plunge into the cold Atlantic Ocean on New Year's Day.  Why would we do something so dumb?  For a good cause, that's why.

"Punks for a Princess is a nonprofit charity organization started in memory of 7-year old Kaitlyn Ferra, who tragically passed away on August 7, 2008. While vacationing in Ashland, New Hampshire, the family SUV was suddenly swept away in a devastating flash flood. Her mother and brother were also carried downstream, but were eventually rescued."

This P4aP event is designated to benefit the family of Angelina Rose Cox.  She was diagnosed with Type 1 SMA.  Infants diagnosed with this pathology do not live longer than 2 years and she will never hold her head up, roll over, crawl, or walk.  Eventually she will not be able to eat, or breathe.  Though she looks healthy and happy, her muscles are dying.

The reason I am doing this to myself, jumping into the frigid, unforgiving Atlantic Ocean on New Year's day is simply because I can and I am blessed to do something so dumb when other less fortunate people and children cannot.  For a few moments I will feel uncomfortable, while some children who are living entire lives with conditions far worse than taking a "plunge".  At the point where I cannot take it anymore, I will run out of the water, dry myself off, and warm up my body.  Children like Angelina do not have that option.  It seems dumb, and I have to wonder why I would do this to myself.  It is for the cause and the children fighting harsher conditions and battles that with some luck, I will never have to endure personally.

If you would like to join my team, please email me at zeppo.cancersucks@gmail.com or comment here.  There is a 25 dollar donation to join and you will get a sweet Punk Rock Plunge tee shirt for your sacrifice.

Battle On!
